BELGIAN JEWS, WITH FINNTROLL 1984 (BATTLEFIELD V) During the German occupation, about 25,000 Jews were deported from Belgium to termination camps and more than 24,000 of them died. Belgium counted around 75,000 Jews, most of them new immigrants that lived in Brussels, Antwerp, Liège and Charleroi. After the invasion of Belgium mid-1940, a series of anti-Semetic laws was passed by the Military Government on 28 October 1940 but the Belgian Committee of Secretary-Generals refused to carry out these laws. Also the Belgian police officially refused to help out with the deportation of Jews, as opposed to the routine tasks. The Germans seized all Jewish property in Belgium and created the Judenrat, the AJB, which was a group that all Jews were required to join in order to have a list. From May 1942, a yellow Star of David had to be worn by all Jews at all times to make them recognized everywhere and the AJB registers were used to start the deportation. They were sent to the Mechelen transit camp and then moved to Poland or Auschwitz. So, the Belgian population was divided since 1942 with collaborators and resistance groups. Catholic priests and nuns, as well as brave citizens, helped to hide the Jews and by the end of the war about 40% of the Jews were in hiding. Belgians who were eager to collab were the fascist political parties such as VNV and Algemeene-SS Vlaanderen. They encouraged all the actions and helped with round-ups, while the Volksverwering was specially formed to unite Belgian anti-Semites. Individuel police officers broke the law by assisting in arrests and round-ups, at least 3 of them active in Brussels. Especially in Antwerp there was a lot of help with the facilitation of the conscription of Jews for forced labour in France in 1941 after the SiPo-SD threatened to imprison local officials in Fort Breendonk. According to most sources, around 20% of the Jews were arrested by police officers. The CDJ (Comité de Défense des Juifs) managed to save 4,000 children and 10,000 adults from death and was just one of dozens of organised resistance groups.
