By the end of Summer 1941, the SS occupied 5 regions that were formerly owned by the Soviet Union: Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Ukraine and Belorussia. The Jew Hunt in these regions was conducted by crooked police officers looking for some extra cash. They were paid a nice price for every arrested Jew that could work and were seen as traitors by the population. The policemen had to remain incognito in fear for reprisals against themselves and their families. Jewish children and elderly were often murdered on the spot while people who offered shelter or help to the Jews were also executed. The Bielski Partisans were also formed because of this, with 4 brothers from the Bielski family and other survivors that fled into the Navahrudak forest. Tuvia became the leader but he did not believe in taking lives as retaliation and only murdered the policeman who was responsible for the murder of his parents and his contact. Tuvia killed the policeman's 2 sons sitting in his house at the dinner table, before killing the policeman himself. The wife was left behind with her grief. Alexander Zeisal 'Zus' Bielski however, was looking for vengeance and forgot all about the Jewish mentality so Tuvia and Zus often had disputes. After a German patrol crew chased the growing community deeper into the woods, the Bielski Partisans ran into a group of Soviet Partisans. Nobody was harmed and both groups could continue to live in the Navahrudak forest but after another dispute with Tuvia, Zus left and joined the Soviet Partisans. Pirates who sabotaged railroads, killed small SS-divisions, robbed trespassers and executed traitors. During the cold Winter of 1941-1942, Tuvia became very ill and was also faced with a large famine, leading up to mutiny from a group of forest citizens. It caused Tuvia to kill the leader of the mutiny to regain order. Medicins were vital to save Tuvia and the sick community suffering from a virus, but the Soviet Partisans did not share their meds! They only cared for other Soviets and saw the Jews as weak and lacking survival skills. Zus decided to execute a raid on a local police station to steal medicins and his courage saved Tuvia from death. By April of 1942, the SS had surrounded the Navahrudak woods and planned an attack but Zus was not allowed to desert the Soviets and return to his people. Tuvia escorted the group out of the woods and into a giant swamp but once accross, they were attacked by a Panzer division. Tuvia was able to flank the division, kill a few artillery gunners, take over the LMG and waste half the division before being targeted himself. At the last moment, his brother Zus and some fellow Jewish comrades stormed in and destroyed the other half of the division with a stealthy attack. After this incident, the community moved to the Nalibocka forest and survived. After the war, Zus and Tuvia emigrated to the United States and started a business, forming a partnership for 30 years. The Bielski Partisans were the only Jews in Europe living in freedom, as a resistance army. finntroll 1984: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1sG...
