Panzer Ace Michael Wittmann had been fighting in the defence of Normandy and had become famous on June 13 of 1944, when he took out a British tank division that was having a short break. In 15 minutes time, his Tiger I crew managed to take out 14 tanks, 15 personnel carriers and 2 anti-tank guns. The news was widely broadcasted by the German propaganda machine but on August 8, after the liberation of Caen by the Brits, Wittmann's Tiger I tank was spotted by a British tank gunner called Joe Ekins aboard an American Sherman Firefly tank. He lined up and took out the legendary Panzer Ace with one shot of his 3-inch caliber 17-pounder-gun. On the same day of August 8, Hitler had seen the execution of several suspected bomb plotters of the July 20 explosion in the Wolf's Lair. A bomb had gone off in Hitler's conference room in the morning of July 20. Executions followed after intense trials on August 8 and hundreds of suspects were murdered by German security forces as a reprisal for the bomb plot. On August 15, the first Allied amphibious landing in South France took place during Operation Dragoon that lasted until September 14. General Johannes Blaskowitz lost the German battle for Occupied France and saw a total of 7,000 German combatants die. The Free French saw 10,000 casualties and USA counted 3,100 soldiers who were killed, missing or captured. On August 25, Paris was finally liberated after 4 long years with support of the French Resistance. Romania disbanded itself from the Axis and joined the cause of the Red Army on August 23. On August 31, the puppet government of Vichy was overthrown and replaced with representatives of the Free French movement. Also the Pacific War saw more advances with the capture of Saipan, Burma and Guam. Between October 23 and 26, the American and Australian forces even managed to win the largest naval battle in history called Battle of Leyte Gulf! The enormous battleship Musashi was sunk during this battle in the Philippines, leaving the Yamato behind. With the German megaship Tirpitz still docked in Norway, Hitler had one more trick up his sleeve but Churchill was determined to sink The Beast. Allied troops disagreed about the post-Overlord mission, with the Brits opting for the destruction of all German V-2 installations and the Tirpitz. An all-American division marched towards Liège in East Belgium to breach the Westwall via the Aachen Gap and to attack the city of Aachen, while a mixed group of Allied troops went for North Belgium and the Netherlands. German citizens were used to bombardments but had never seen a ground battle on German soil. Members of the Volkssturm and Hitlerjugend were eager to help out the German Army for the defence of their homeland and Führer. Slowly but surely, every German citizen would be turned into an instrument of war. Those who opposed, would become isolated or would be murdered. finntroll 1984: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1sG...
