finntroll 1984 HITLER DEAD: BERLIN IN RUINS (FINN'S WAR TALES #52 WW II CODWWII) In this video I explain Hitler's last month as Führer of The Third Reich. Dresden had seen 40,000 dead civilians during an Allied bombardment in February and also Berlin was turned into a ruin before the Red Army advance. On March 19 of 1945, Hitler even ordered the Nero Decree to Albert Speer: the destruction of all German infrastructure. Several concentration and termination camps as well as Slovakia and Austria were liberated by the Red Army. On April 12, US President Roosevelt passed away after a long period of illness and was replaced by Harry Truman but Hitler and Göbbels saw it as a miracle. The Red Army left their camp at the Oder river in March and were ready for revenge, outnumbering the German forces 10 to 1! On April 16, the Battle of Berlin began at the hillsides of Seelower Höhen (Seelow Heights). Until April 19, 1 million Red Army troops and 78,000 Polish soldiers battled for the hillsides where an 58-km anti-tank trench had been dug by the Germans to block the Soviet tank units. On April 20, the Battle of Halbe was fought and saw a small amount of 30,000 9th German Army troops reach their comrades of the 12th Army. 120,000 others were killed or captured by the Red Army! On the same day, Hitler saw his 56th birthday in his Citadel bunker complex. By April 25, the Teltow Canal was crossed in the south of Berlin and by April 27, there was an attack on the vital and heavily defended Tempelhof airfield (aka the Gates of Berlin). Teltow was the outer defensive line of the Citadel, Tempelhof the inner line. The last advance into the actual Citadel was made between dusk and midnight of April 28 via the Moltke bridge, the only remaining bridge accross the water surrounding the Citadel and Hitler's bunker. 200,000 citizens fled into the 3 giant Flak Towers that were heavily targeted by Soviet tanks but managed to withstand the impact. The closer to the Citadel, the more intense the German resistance became. Also the Panzerfaust (anti-tank gun) proved its worth and was very easy to operate. In Italy, Benito Mussolini and his mistress were captured and shot on April 28 by angry civilians and their bodies were strung up in Milan the next day. On April 30 of 1945, Adolf Hitler decided to commit suicide alongside his wife Eva Braun around 03.30 in the afternoon. The couple had been wed on April 29 as a reward for Eva's loyalty to the Führer. Megaphones were used to spread the word about Hitler's demise and thousands of Germans committed suicide in fear of captivity or another Versailles Treaty. Joseph Göbbels remained Führer for the remaining hours and sabotaged General Krebs' armistice offer to Soviet General Chujkov. Göbbels and his wife Magda commited suicide several hours later, after poisoning their 6 sleeping children. Generals Krebs and Burgdorf committed suicide in the bunker, while Martin Bormann was found dead in a Berlin bar later. The Battle of Berlin officially ended on May 2, 1945, when General Chujkov reached an agreement with Helmuth Weidling. On May 4, also Grossadmiral Dönitz surrendered and on May 6, there was the liberation of Prague. Switzerland had closed its borders to Nazi war criminals and Heinrich Himmler, Chief of the SS, committed suicide during a physical examination by the Allied meds after his capture. After a double armistice was signed by Germany, the country remained under Allied control until 1949 before being split up into East Germany and West Germany. Europe was free by mid 1945 but the Pacific Ocean was far from a peaceful resolution. finntroll 1984: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1sG...
