finntroll 1984 HUNGARY CAMPAIGN: DEBRECEN & BUDAPEST (FINN'S WAR TALES #48 WW II CODWWII) In this video I explain the struggle for Hungary from October 1944 until February 13, 1945. After signing an armistice with the Soviet Union, Hungary was helped by the Red Army and Romania but many Germans were still stationed in Hungary. On top of that, the son of leader Miklos Horthy was kidnapped by German commandos to make him step down. A pro-Nazi government took over and divided the soldiers and citizens into Soviet supporters and headstrong Axis members. Also Hungarian members of the Army Group South Ukraine still collaborated with the German occupiers and between October 6 and October 29, Debrecen was a warzone. The first steps for a pincer move were carried out and by October 10, the Soviets had been driven back to the Tisza river by Hungarian cavalry and German anti-aircraft gunners. A huge Red Army advance was seen in the south of Hungary but in the north they were held back to 10 kilometers. More German Panzer divisions were mobilizing around the Tisza river in South Hungary, reinforcing and losing bridgeheads on the western shore, and between October 26 and October 29 the Hungarians were unable to defeat the Romanians during the Third Romanian Offensive. The Battle of Debrecen ended up in a tactical victory for Germany but a strategical victory for the Soviets. Right after that, the Budapest Offensive kicked off from October 29 until February 13 of 1945, with the Siege of Budapest starting from December 26. 76,000 civilians were killed, half of them in the siege and the other half in prison camps. Hitler was forced to leave his Wolf's Lair by late November and also the prestigious SS-digsite of Project Giant was abandoned. Located near Osówka in West Poland, a massive tunnel system had been dug into the ground to connect 7 different independent compartments. Pointed directly at the entrances, there were fox holes for machine gunners. Project Giant had cost tremendous amounts of concrete and had been dug manually by workers, in order to have a safehaven for the Führer, Heinrich Himmler and the SS soldiers. The site was never used and would have been unable to sustain life because of humidity and cold. In the Pacific War there was a decisive victory in the Philippine Islands between October 23 and October 26 with a new US base on Tinian Island in the Marianas, a vital base for attacks on Japanese home islands. Japanese Prime Minister Tojo had been forced to resign by his emperor mid 1944, but Japan had been driven into a more headstrong attacking style with the new war commander Ugaki. Ohka planes became suicide bombers and Kaiten subs became manned torpedos for maximum efficiency. On the Japanese island of Otsushima, an entire launch site was constructed for Kaitens. The Ohka was a dive bomber with a kamikaze pilot and a giant bomb attached to the bottom of the plane. 3 I-400 submarines were built, even though Japanese resources were running out fast, but would ultimately be used for a different purpose than its original one. finntroll 1984: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1sG...
