finntroll 1984 OPERATION COBRA: BOCAGE COUNTRY (FINN'S WAR TALES #45 WW II CODWWII) In this video I explain the excruciating American struggle under the command of Lieutenant-General Omar Bradley between Cherbourg, in the utmost North West of France, and Saint-Lô during an inhumain journey through the dense hedges of the Bocage Country. 50% of the Cotentin peninsula consisted of Bocage hedges and pastures, offering a huge advantage to the well-camouflaged German defences. The only trails that US troops could travel along were the small open paths between the hedges and woods, unwillingly maximizing the chances that hidden Germans could attack them. By now, the German defenders had learned a thing or two about defensive tactics and they had even incorporated their tanks and mobile divisions into the setting of the Bocage by masking them with large parts of hedge and bush. Nearly invisible to enemy infantry and air recon, the camping German troops easily took out massive numbers of American troops on the widely-exposed paths from July 16 until July 25 of 1944, when Operation Cobra began. The objective was to create a corridor in West France so the Germans could be flanked and ultimately surrounded in the middle of Normandy by linking up with Montgomery's troops from Caen. Operation Cobra took place between July 25 and July 31, with an initial bombardment of the frontline road between Perrier and Saint-Lô but after July 27, the Germans were finally driven back. Another 1,800 American casulaties were counted during this July 25 mission but luckily, a breach had been created. On August 7, there was a failed attempt for a Nazi counter-offensive between Mortain and Avranches resulting in the capture of Le Mans by the newly established Third US Army on August 8. Caen had been secured by the Brits on August 6, after an offensive that had lasted for an entire month. A vital accomplishment in Operation Overlord, that had been planned for day one of the invasion. The Third US Army also captured Argentan and with the help of the First US Army in Falaise, a pocket was created to trap the Germans. Dante's Inferno was unleashed on the remaining Nazi soldiers and 6,000 of them were killed! Operation Cobra had required 8 infantry divisions, 3 armoured divisions and 2,451 tanks. With all of Normandy and North-West France secured, a move could be made for the areas around Paris. But one month before Operation Cobra, the war could have been over already. Hitler survived a bomb explosion in the conference room of his Rastenburg Wolf's Lair HQ on July 20 of 1944. Claus von Stauffenberg, who had managed to gain access to Hitler's conference and had placed a briefcase-bomb under the table of this room before leaving, was the most notorious conspirator of Operation Valkyrie. A small unit of German resistance fighters was certain that the Führer had been killed, but the operation failed in only 5 hours time. Hitler miraculously survived with minor injuries and already went out to show himself in public several hours later for a meeting with Mussolini! The Gestapo would retaliate for Op Valkyrie by executing the small unit including von Stauffenberg.
