ROTTERDAM BLITZ, WITH FINNTROLL 1984 (BATTLEFIELD V - DEVASTATION MAP WITH STURMGEWEHR 1-5) On May 14,1940, the city of Rotterdam in West Holland was carpet bombed by the Luftwaffe, leading to 884 deaths and 95,000 homeless civilians. The bombardment was carried out by Heinkel HE 111 bombers, an iconic model and the backbone of the German bomber fleet. The HE 111 had also served in the Spanish Civil War and was used at every frontline in German WWII ops. It was described as a wolf in sheep's clothing, masqueraded as a civil airliner after its design in 1934. 6,508 of them were built in total, including 32 prototypes and 808 pre-war aircraft. It had a greenhouse nose, making it very recognizable. A few weeks after the campaign in the Benelux and France, the HE 111 were tested in the Battle of Britain but that's where they failed going up against the RAF. It was pushed back as a strategic bomber and became a torpedo bomber in the Atlantic and Arctic. In Rotterdam's medieval city-centre, all but the St. Lawrence Church was annihilated by a 15-minute bombardment that started on 1:30 pm. The Church was badly damaged but was still standing, while everything else had been bombed to the ground or was destroyed in the fires afterwards. But this wasn't the only bad happening in Rotterdam because by the end of 1944, the Hunger Winter began as a result of a German blockade and a strike from Dutch railroad workers. The north and north-west of Holland was isolated and still occupied, left to starve until the end of April 1945. 4.5 million people managed to survive thanks to soup kitchens but 22,000 people died according to most sources. Allied bomber crews carried out operations Manna and Chowhound by the end of the war, dropping food over the areas in return for a German ceasefire. Op Faust followed on May 2, when Allied trucks delivered food to the city of Rhemen behind German lines.
