finntroll 1984 SIEGE OF STALINGRAD: AXIS FALLS APART (FINN'S WAR TALES #35 WW II CODWWII) In this video finntroll 1984 takes a closer look at the 2 Axis battles that took place in the Soviet Union during 1942: the Battle of Sevastopol from October 30, 1941 until July 4, 1942, and the brutal Siege of Stalingrad. The Romanian Army had assisted Germany for the Crimae Campaign from October 18, 1941, until November 16, 1941, and was joined by Italy for the Siege of Sevastopol. Heavy rains late November kept Field Marshal von Manstein from an offensive until mid December. With Sevastopol located in the very south of the Crimae, Soviet resistance was joined by reinforcements during amphibious landings on the Kerch peninsula in East Crimae. The Kerch bridgehead was maintained until May of 1942, when German troops launched Operation Störfang on June 2. Heavy bombardments were carried out for weeks and by July 4, Sevastopol belonged to the Axis forces. Fall Blau (Case Blue) had already begun on June 28, where the 2 targets were the oilfields in Caucasus and Stalingrad. German, Italian, Romanian, Hungarian and Croatian troops were involved in Case Blue so it was one of the biggest operations since the Battle of Moscow. But by November 24, 1942, also this battle was forsaken by Marshal Fedor von Bock. Volgograd, back then known as Stalingrad, was also located in the south of the Soviet Union near the Volga river. Japan had agreed to attack Stalin if Hitler would be able to conquer a city near the Volga. An attack on Stalingrad began on August 23, 1942, and lasted until February 2, 1943, with German defeat! Germany, Italy, Hungary, Croatia and Romania had been drawn into another 5-month battle! Soviet snipers lying between the ruins of the destroyed buildings made it impossible for the Germans to advance. A brutal and beastlike attack had been carried out by the Luftwaffe and the Panzer divisions and by November 1942, it resulted in house-to-house combat. The Soviets severely damaged the Hungarian and Romanian flanks during Operation Uranus on November 19, exposing the 6th German Army. Adapted with warm clothing, the Axis were drawn into another Russian Winter fight, where many Tiger tanks were knocked out of battle with mechanical failure. Even though the Tiger tanks with their immense 88mm Flak cannons were a huge problem for the Soviet T-34 tanks, the Tiger's mechanics were still not able to withstand the Winter conditions. A total of 850,000 Axis soldiers had taken on 1.7 million Soviet combatants in Stalingrad. 12% of the Axis troops were taken as POWs, 88% ended up dead or wounded. A total of 750,000 Soviet troops were killed, captured or wounded. Hitler had lost the Battle of Moscow because of the railroad barricade, but the Battle of Stalingrad was lost against the people defending their city amongst the rubble. finntroll 1984: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1sG...
