finntroll 1984 VICHY REGIME: CLIENT TO PUPPET (FINN'S WAR TALES #21 WW II CODWWII) On June 22, 1940, Vichy-France was born after the Nazis established Vichy as the new de facto capital in the very middle of France. The remaining south was known as 'La Zone Libre' or Free France, including the colonies in North Africa: Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria. Marshal Philippe Pétain, former commander in Verdun during WWI, became the head of the Client State Vichy. However, the 'free' situation from June 1940 until November 1942 was not pleasant. A tight supervision was held on the economy, many liberal policies were reversed, women's independence disappeared, Jews were captured and unions were closely monitored. Also the western coastline was occupied to avoid enemy landings. The main reason why there was no civilian resistance in Vichy were 2 million North French soldiers, held as prisoners. During all of 1941, they built 5 new Nazi U-boat bases in North West France with Lorient as the most important one. Nicknamed 'The Base of Aces', it had 2 hangars with 3,5-meter roofs: K1 for repairs and K2 for storage. French engineer Jacques Stosskopf overlooked the construction and was seen as a collaborator but was a secret informant for the French Resistance. For years, he supplied the allies with information on U-boat destinations but once exposed in 1943, the Nazi tortured him in a concentration camp and executed him in 1944. But because Grossadmiral Karl Dönitz's Enigma Code had been cracked in 1943 already, the Brits were able isolate the submarine radio frequency and track down the U-boat locations! Their own conversations would betray them, with hundreds of destroyed U-boats as a result in 1943! Vichy-France was forced to step down from its role as Client State in November of 1942 after Fall Anton, the invasion of South France between November 10-27, which was a necessary response to an American landing operation in Morocco called Operation Torch. It was led by General Eisenhower from the British fortress on the Gibraltar peninsula in South Spain with American troops landing closeby in Morocco, with the intention of driving the remaining German and Italian resistance in Libya into a pocket. The Vichy government was dissolved and replaced by a puppet government from November 1942 until the Summer of 1944, while the new Atlantic Wall became the main slave project starting Autumn of 1942. After the liberation of France in the Summer of 1944, Pétain and his former Vichy government would be executed for treason along with thousands of collaborators. It was an order from General Charles De Gaulle, who returned to Normandy a few days after D-Day. He was greeted as a war hero and hundreds of overjoyed citizens marched through the streets of Bayeux together with their general on that marvelous day. So Hitler only controlled the entire country of France from November of 1942 until June 6, 1944, after forcing a military occupation onto the south. But a failed Battle of North Africa led in the end for Hitler's Occupied France with more amphibious landings in South France, and the Gibraltar peninsula as an important location. finntroll 1984: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1sG...
