BATTLE OF ARRAS, WITH FINNTROLL 1984 (BATTLEFIELD V) Arras had already been a battlefield in WWI before it was soaked in blood again in WWII. Between April 9 and May 16, 1917, there was a British offensive in this French town in the Pas-de-Calais region and the longest advance of the war was achieved here. 160,000 casualties were counted for the Brits and 125,000 losses for Germany. 23 years later, another massacre happened in Arras on May 21, 1940. A British counter-offensive led by General Franklyn against the incoming German invaders was supposed to become a mission to cut through the spearhead of the German attack, but after a 10-km advance the Anglo-French were forced to retreat in order not to be encircled. A little gain was achieved that day but the Germans still got the win. 74 tanks were reduced to 24 after the offensive, with 100 Brits killed or wounded. 200 were captured, which was an even worse faith for British soldiers, cause a few massacres on POWs were performed. On May 28, 80 Allied POWs were executed during the Wormhoudt Massacre and also the Le Paradis Massacre saw nearly 100 executions one day earlier. From the 225 available German tanks at Arras, only 32 were lost but that included the entire 7th Panzer Division. 400 Germans were captured while 300 were killed or wounded, despite the massive victory for Field Marshal Erwin Rommel at the end of the day. Earlier that day, there had been a catastrophic mix-up when French troops exchanged fire with British anti-tank guns at the city of Warlus, causing a few British deaths and several French tanks that were hit. After a long day, Commander Franklyn ordered the right column and left column to withdraw and later during the night the French cavalry near Warlus were surrounded. Only the infantry of the right column was rescued from captivity.
