finntroll 1984 BATTLE OF NORTH AFRICA: DESERT FOX ROMMEL (FINN'S WAR TALES #36 WW II CODWWII) An extremely notorious figure from the World War II scene is Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, commander of the Afrika Korps in Libya during the Battle of Africa with the nickname Desert Fox. After the Italian 10th Army had been destroyed during the British Operation Compass between December 9 and February 9, Rommel arrived in Tripoli on February 6, 1941. With 2 German divisions he secured Cyrenaica, Benghazi, Sollum and Tobruk between February 14 and May 25, 1941. Nearly all British tanks were destroyed, with only 100 tank losses for the Axis! A total of 150,000 troops and 1,000 tanks should have suffided for Rommel's quest, no more men could be spared by Hitler. British Commander-In-Chief Field Marshal Archibald Wavell admitted to having underestimated the impact of Rommel's presence. Sending the experienced units to Greece after Op Compass proved a costly mistake! Not only Sollum was secured by Rommel, also Tobruk became a tough defensive line. Between June 15-17, a British offensive in Sollum called Op Battleaxe failed and led to the replacement of Wavell by Field Marshal Claude Auchinleck. From July 1-27, 1942, Auchinleck saw a Rommel offensive in Egypt but the Afrika Korps was held down on its way to El Alamein. 13,250 Germans were killed or captured with 17,000 Brits suffering the same faith. When Churchill visited in August of 1942 on his way towards Moscow to meet Stalin, he replaced Auchinleck with Lieutenant-General William Gott, who was killed by a Messerschmitt attack later. General Bernard Montgomery took over command from Gott and between August 30 and September 6, Rommel broke his teeth on Monty's defensive line in the Battle of Alam el Halfa, south of Sollum. 4 British and New Zealand divisions held back 6 German divisions with another 2,900 Axis troops killed or captured. Rommel had asked for more troops to secure the Egyptian coastline but an attaché was sent by Hitler in stead, to evaluate the situation before acting. Another defeat for Rommel came in the Second Battle of El Alamein from October 23 until November 11, 1942. 116,000 Axis troops with 559 tanks fought in that battle and saw another 50,000 killed, wounded or captured. A lack of troops and US Operation Torch in November 1942 led in the German demise in Tunisia. 73,000 allied troops and 60,000 French soldiers landed in North West Africa via 3 entry points, with Dwight Eisenhower leading the op from the British fort in Gibraltar. On November 17, 1942, the allies started the Tunisia Campaign and on May 9, 1943, the remaining 230,000 Germans and Italians were captured. Rommel escaped to Italy but on July 20, 1944, Hitler survived a bomb attack in his Wolf's Lair HQ! Rommel was considered a possible suspect but Hitler lacked proof. However, on October 14, 1944, Erwin Rommel took his own life to avoid reprisals against his family. He was buried later with full military respects. A military genius who did a very noble thing to spare his loved ones. finntroll 1984: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1sG...
